In answer to your question of how I got picked to go up there (on KAO
flights), it was really just a matter of applying for the job and
winning it.  Two months before I was hired, I barely knew a thing about
the KAO! I was looking for a job, and my physics advisor told me about
an opening on the KAO.  I applied to it, and little over a month later I
had the job and was on my way to New Zealand for training (the KAO was in
New Zealand at the time I was hired, so they sent me down there).  But
that's it, really! I had no previous work experience, and only two years
in the Peace Corps as a teacher after leaving college.  Sometimes
miracles do happen.
