Nicole's STS-92 Launch Journal

Our trip had been fun so far, and today it was going to be even more exciting; we were going to meet a celebrity!  June Lockhart, best known for her role as Timmy's mother in the tv series Lassie, was allowing us to interview her.  We were also going to film a live webcast along with the other members at Ames.  I was nervous, but excited.

We first stopped to pick up our press badges in order to gain access to the NASA press site.  Then we toured the KSC Visitor's Complex.  (Check out Anna's or Liz's journal to learn more about the Visitor's Complex and our tour.

After we explored the Visitor's Complex, we drove to the press site to meet June.  We read her bio and prepped in the van.  The press site is near the Vehicle Assembly Building, so we took some quick photos.  Then we went to the press room to meet June. Nicole in front of the

The press site is really cool.  There is a building for almost every major tv network.  The main building is NASA's press room, where the public relations director gives out information to the media.  There are bleachers next to the press room that face the launch pad and a countcown clock.  The media sets up there to watch launches, but they aren't allowed to place tripods in the bleachers.  The bleachers are also where we were going to film our webcast.

 Questions we prepared to ask
June

We went inside the NASA press room to get acquainted with June.  Anna, Liz, and I were a little nervous, but she was really cordial and funny.  She was also very eager to have us interview her, and that rid us of any butterflies we still had.
We went to the bathroom to freshen up.  We also prepared all our questions in there, and Liz and Anna decided that I should conduct the interview.
After we finished prepping, I headed off to a spot set up for us in front of the bleachers.  June and I settled ourselves in some chairs, and Barbara handed me the mike.  Lights, camera, action!

After the interview, June let us take some pictures with her, and she also signed the reporter's note pads we were given in the press room.  Andrea invited her to be interviewed at our webcast, and June was eager and willing.  I decided on one question to ask her, and Liz and Anna prepared some questions to ask their interviewees.  These interviews were going to be a little more difficult because they were live.  People from all over the nation were also going to ask us questions. Hopefully I knew the answers!

The webcast was also a lot of fun.  Anna, Liz, and I just acted like ourselves, and we were able to answer everybody's questions.  Liz's interviewee didn't show up when we expected, but, luckily, Liz and I ad libbed.  Overall, it turned out really well, and I was beginning to get over my fear of interviewing people I hadn't met and public speaking.  There was only one problem during everything: we were eaten alive by mosquitos!
