Hello to our early arriving chat participants. Today's Black History Month
chat with Kim Hubbard from NASA Ames Research Center will begin in just
under 30 minutes. Be sure you have read Kim's profile at http://quest.nasa.gov/women/bios/kh.html to prepare
your questions.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 3 - 08:33:39

Today's chat will be MODERATED to help Kim keep up with our questions.
This means only a few questions will appear in the chat room at a time.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 4 - 08:34:19
]
DON'T WORRY if you don't see your questions appear immediately. We will
post a few questions periodically for Kim to answer as we continue the
chat.

At the conclusion of today's chat, please take a few minutes to share
your thought with us. You may use our feedback feature on our QuestChat
Information Center to communicate with us. The QIC is located at http://quest.nasa.gov/qchats. We look forward to hearing from
you!

Good Morning! I'm Kim Hubbard and I'm ready to answer your questions.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 8 - 09:04:56
]
Hello and welcome to today's Black History Month chat with Kim Hubbard
from NASA Ames Research Center! Currently, Kim Hubbard is working as part
of a team to develop a new project called ScienceDesk. ScienceDesk will
provide tools to members of science teams, located in different areas,
allowing them to conduct research together. ScienceDesk will include tools
for conducting experiments remotely, tracking scientific progress, and
accessing information on the Internet.

RE: [EdisonSchool] When did you know
that you wanted to work at NASA?
Hi Edison School, I never actually planned to work at NASA. I was lucky
enough to have someone recommend me for a summer position at NASA. I was
hired and the summer position became a year-round part-time position while
I went to school. Eventually I was hired as a full-time NASA engineer.
[ KimHubbard/ARC - 11 - 09:09:25 ]
RE: [EdisonSchool] I'm Lauren Meehan
and I am from Edison Middle School in West Orange, New Jersey. How long
have you wanted to be a computer engineer?
Hi Lauren, I've been interested in computers and programming since high
school but I didn't seriously pursue a computer science/engineering career
until about 9 years ago. I had recently left the Air Force and was looking
for a job where I could do hands-on technical work. My jobs in the Air
Force were project management work where I didn't do any programming.
[ KimHubbard/ARC - 14 - 09:13:26 ]
RE: [EdisonSchool] I am Lory Denis
also, of Edison Middle School. I wanted to know do you enjoy doing what
you do? WHY?
Hi Lory, I like my job very much most of the time. I get to work with
some very nice and talented people. Also I have the opportunity to work
on different projects. There is always something else to learn. I like
developing and using new technical skills such as learning a new programming
language or building a software application that will help prove a concept
or help a scientist do her job better.
[ KimHubbard/ARC - 17 - 09:16:48 ]
RE: [EdisonSchool] My name is Stephanie
Souffrant and I would like to know did you have an interest in science
when you were younger?
Hi Stephanie, I've always been very interested in science. I enjoyed reading
about biology and how the human body works. I took science during all
four years of high school. I took physics and chemistry in college and
a biology course after college. I also like reading about famous scientists
such as Marie Curie, Lise Meitner, and Rosalind Franklin.
[ KimHubbard/ARC - 18 - 09:19:20 ]
RE: [Carlitos] How do you manage
to balance work and home life?
Hi Carlitos, Well it's hard sometimes but I do the best I can. Fortunately
my husband and I who also works full-team make a pretty good team for
taking care our daughters and household. I also try to take good care
of myself by eating right, getting regular exercise, and getting enough
sleep. I also have a couple of hobbies for a creative outlet.
[ KimHubbard/ARC - 20 - 09:23:01 ]
RE: [EdisonSchool] This is Lauren
Meehan again. I was wondering what you like most about your field of work?
Lauren, I guess what I like most is computer technology is changing all
the time so there's always something else to learn. It's fun trying to
keep up. It's also become very portable in terms of actual computing equipment
and networking and that I can do my job either here at my office or from
my home if I needed to.
[ KimHubbard/ARC - 22 - 09:28:50 ]
RE: [EdisonSchool] I am Lory Denis
and I am an 8th grade student at Edison Middle School. If you had an idea
of what you would do when you were in high school, what would you have
said?
Lory, I would try to study very hard and try to figure out what subject
I'd like the best which is what I did in high school by the way. When
I graduated from high school, my good grades helped me earn college scholarships
and get accepted into very good colleges. Also by the end of high school
I realized I had a strong interest in math and science. I also liked history
a lot. I hope this answers your question.
[ KimHubbard/ARC - 24 - 09:33:38 ]
RE: [EdisonSchool] Lory Denis again.
What exactly do you do over the course of a day?
Lory, Currently I'm working with a team of about five other people on
a software application that runs in a web page called the ScienceOrganizer.
The application will allow scientists to enter data on experiments and
retrieve this data for later study and analysis. To do this I have to
program in a variety of programming languages: HTML, Perl, and Java. Since
we've already defined what the ScienceOrganizer design, I've mostly just
been doing programming and testing to make sure there are no major programming
bugs.

RE: [EdisonSchool] Lauren here. It
says in your biography that you have a BS in Electrical Engineering. What
exactly is Electrical Engineering
Lauren, Electrical Engineering is a very broad field. It includes the
study of basic electronics principles so that people can make components
for TVs, VCRs, cars, computers or power systems so that these devices
can operate or that we have electricity in our homes.
