Hello and welcome to today's NASA Quest/Women of NASA chat with Lisa Shore!
Lisa Shore is the first woman to be certified as an Ascent Flight Dynamics
Officer (FDO, pronounced fido). During a mission, she is responsible for
knowing where the Shuttle is at all times.

Don't forget our Women's History Month contest this week is all about
Lisa. Details are available at http://quest.nasa.gov/women/WHMcontest.intro.html
And now, here is Lisa Shore to answer your questions.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 8 - 13:02:39 ]
Hi everybody!
[ Janice - 5 - 13:02:32 ]
Do all NASA emploies have to be an american citizen?
[ LisaShore/JSC - 9 - 13:03:29 ]
Hi Janice. I don't think all NASA employees have to be US citizens but
it may effect the kind of work you can do.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 10 - 13:04:18 ]
RE: [Heather] Did you have the opportunity
to meet the crew from the Challenger?
Hi Heather. I never got to meet the Challenger crew. I arrived in Houston
after they left for Florida.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 13 - 13:05:32 ]
RE: [Shenice] Besides your dad, what
else inspired you to work for NASA?
Hi Shenice. I think lots of things influenced me to work for NASA. I liked
math and science a lot so it seemed a natural place to go. Space is just
something that has always fascinated me.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 15 - 13:06:40 ]
RE: [Johnny] What kind of student
were you in elementary school and what was your lowest grade?
Elementary school was a long time ago Johnny but I think I did really
well after about 4th grade I don't think I had any grades below a B.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 17 - 13:07:50 ]
RE: [MrsThornton] Do you ever travel
international for your job?
Hi Mrs. Thornton. I haven't done any international travelling yet but
I hope to in the future. NASA has a lot of people that travel to Russia
at the moment.

Information Center at http://quest.nasa.gov/qchats to send us your feedback to send
us your feedback.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 20 - 13:09:17 ]
RE: [Corbin] Have you had the opportunity
to meet anyone famous?
Hi Corbin. I've been very lucky to have met some famous people in the
Mission Control Center. I met President Clinton, Tom Hanks, Ron Howard,
Donald Sutherland to name a few.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 21 - 13:10:20 ]
RE: [Jake] Were you nervous on your
first day as FDO?
Jake, I'm a little bit nervous every time we launch but I think that's
a good thing. You don't want to feel too comfortable. Being a little nervous
keeps you on your toes :).
[ Patrick - 22 - 13:11:12 ]
How long have you been with NASA?
[ LisaShore/JSC - 25 - 13:12:52 ]
Hi Patrick. I've been at NASA for about 14 years. I started out doing
Space Shuttle mission design work. After about 4 years I moved over to
the real-time operations world and started training as a FDO.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 26 - 13:14:20 ]
RE: [Victoria] Do you think NASA
is fit for anyone interested?
I'm not sure what you meet Victoria?
[ LisaShore/JSC - 29 - 13:15:57 ]
RE: [Janice] Did you have any job
experienc before working for NASA?
Janice. I went to work for the Rockwell Space Operations Company right
out of college. I had some summer jobs but nothing related to the Space
program. The name of the company I work for now is United Space Alliance
(USA).
[ LisaShore/JSC - 31 - 13:18:15 ]
RE: [Phillip] Have you had the opportunity
to deal with other NASA fields outside of FDO?
Hi Phillip. I've only worked on NASA projects related to the Shuttle program
but I have had the opportunity to work with some of our payload customers.
Two of my favorites have been working with JPL on the radar mapping missions
like the one that just flew and on an Italian satellite called LAGEOS.
LAGEOS looked like a giant disco ball.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 34 - 13:20:08 ]
RE: [Amy] What advice would you give
to people who are interested in a career at NASA?
Amy, I would tell anyone that is interested in a career at NASA to find
a field you really like and then go all out for it. It's good if you can
do really well in math and science but NASA has a lot of people that are
in non-technical areas as well. The key is that you are one of the best
in whatever you do.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 35 - 13:21:47 ]
RE: [Amy] What is your favorite space
movie and sci-fri book?
My favorite sci-fi book is probably the Inherit The Stars trilogy
by Ben Hogan. Or maybe the Gateway series by Frederick Pohl. "Star
Wars" is probably my favorite movie series.

RE: [MrsThornton] Thank you for your
time and sharing your knowledge with us. Our school day is about to end,
however we look forward to viewing the archieves tomorrow morning. The
Armstrong Elementary Eagles
We're glad you and your students could join us this afternoon, Mrs. Thornton.
We hope to hear from you online again. Be sure to visit our NASA QuestChat
Information Center at http://quest.nasa.gov/qchats
to send us your feedback. Have a good day!
[ LisaShore/JSC - 39 - 13:24:47 ]
RE: [Victoria] As a Fifth Grader,
what can I do to be a part of NASA one day?
Victoria, I'd say to do as well as you can in school and then get into
college and then get involved as a NASA coop if you can. NASA has programs
to get school kids involved. Check the NASA web site to see what kind
of programs are available and which colleges participate the most with
NASA.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 40 - 13:25:29 ]

Thanks for joining in. I know it's getting late in the day.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 44 - 13:31:53 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] I
wish to work for NASA one day, but the problem is that i live in Norway.(Don
t go thinking that i haven t been asking my perents to moove.) Do you
know if there is any way for me to get my wish to come true?
Janice I'm not sure of all the technicalities involved but I'm sure you
can work for NASA one day. Maybe you can go to an American University.
If not that maybe you could get involved with NASA and the space program
through the European Space Agency. I know that we had some co-op students
from Germany in our division last year.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 45 - 13:33:00 ]

RE: [LisaShore/JSC] I would check with the NASA web

The NASA home page is located at http://www.nasa.gov.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 49 - 13:35:04 ]
Did everyone know that we are preparing for another shuttle launch next
month? We're going back to the Space Station to resupply it and to boost
it's orbit a bit. It's been getting a little lower than we would like.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 50 - 13:36:36 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] What
are the technicalities?
I meant that I don't know what the requirements are to get a work permit
when you aren't a citizen. We have a lot of people from other countries
working here so I know it can be done. Do you want to be an astronaut?
an engineer? doctor?
[ LisaShore/JSC - 52 - 13:38:33 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] Are
you working on the sts-101?
Yes! I'm the ascent FDO. It's only my second time in that position. This
will be my first ground up rendezvous too so it'll be more complicated
than my last flight.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 53 - 13:40:18 ]
RE: [LisaShore/JSC] Yes! I'm the ascent FDO. It's only

I'll be the one who computes the launch targets and the launch window.
A lot of other people will be checking my work but the ultimate responsibility
for ending up in the right place is mine.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 56 - 13:44:27 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] I
do wish to work with math, computers and so on(not an astronaut)
What grade are you in now? Maybe by the time you get to work here we'll
be getting ready to send humans to Mars.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 58 - 13:47:01 ]
My hope is that in the near future NASA will make a commitment to send
humans to Mars or back to the Moon. I think the Station is great but being
a Flight Dynamics person, the most exciting thing I can think of is planning
a trajectory to another planet and then bringing the crew home safely.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 60 - 13:49:28 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] I
did a schoolproject on the sts-99 and got in tuch with many people. Did
you work for sts-99 as well? (the project on sts-99 gave me an A)
That's great! It sounds like you are already on your way to working for
NASA. They like to see that people were interested in space and science
from an early age. I didn't work directly on STS-99 but I was the lead
FDO on the two radar missions before STS-99. They were STS-59 and STS-68.
A lot of the same people from JPL and the Italian Space Agency worked
all three flights.
[ LisaShore/JSC - 62 - 13:52:35 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] I
am going to university in 4 years time.
You're almost there! I would really check the NASA web site for opportunities
to get involved now or once you get to the University. www.NASA.gov
[ LisaShore/JSC - 64 - 13:56:49 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] Would
there be a chance for me to be an FDO?
I just asked my supervisor and he said that you have to be a US citizen
to be a NASA employee. He also said that there are exceptions but didn't
know what they all are. I'm not sure what the requirements are for working
as a contractor like me. You need a government security clearance to be
a FDO so I don't know what the restrictions would be. I'm sorry I don't
have better answers for you.
[ Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY - 68 - 14:00:47 ]
Thank you very much you give me lots of inspiration!! :)
[ LisaShore/JSC - 70 - 14:02:24 ]
RE: [Janice-Janice/Spikkestad/NORWAY] My
mum is Scottish and I am still a British citizen, does this make any difference?
I just don't know. If you e-mail a guy named Scott at Scott.wood1@jsc.nasa.gov I'm sure he
can answer your questions. He's in our Human Resources department.
