Nancy Bingham

photo of nancy bingham Nancy Bingham has been working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Ames Research Center since 1982. Currently she is Associate Director for Systems Management and Planning. This means she is responsible for all long range programmatic and institutional planning at Ames. She also manages all systems and policies, and organizational "inreach "programs.

She has held various Director positions at NASA. Nancy was the acting Director for Research and Development Services until 1998. This means she was responsible for the management of center-wide engineering and manufacturing services and for wind tunnel operations.

Most of her work has involved Aeronautics and she has held the position of Deputy Director for Aeronautics. In this role she was responsible for center-wide program management in support of the Aeronautics Enterprise including Airspace Operation Systems, Development Aeronautics, Wind Tunnel and Simulator Operations, and Rotorcraft. She has also served as Deputy Director of Engineering and Technical Services which is responsible for management of center-wide engineering, manufacturing, and technical services.

Prior to becoming a director, Nancy was Project Manager for the 12 Foot Pressure Wind Tunnel Restoration Project (1987 to 1993), responsible for the design, demolition, reconstruction and test of the restored facility. Project ($110M) was left at 95% complete, on schedule, and $6M under budget. She was also Project Manager for the 12 Foot Pressure Wind Tunnel Recertification Project responsible for inspection, analyses, and testing, leading to the recertification of the pressure shell. Project completed on schedule and under budget in 1986.

Nancy was the Experiment Manager for the Autogenic Feedback Training Experiment on flight 51C of the Space Shuttle. You can find out more about Autogenic Feedback training at http://quest.nasa.gov/women/bios/autogen.ram. This experiment was successfully flown in 1984. She has worked as a design engineer for control systems including the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Facility, the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, and the High Reynolds Number Channel II; as well as the Design Engineer for electronic, telemetry, and computer systems in support of the Life Sciences Flight Experiments Program for the Space Shuttle.

Special Assignments
  • 1994 International Space Station Alpha Independent Assessment Panel, established by the Associate Administrator for Safety and Mission Assurance responsible for nonadvocate review of mission critical issues.
  • 1994 Joint Industry/Government Cost Team, established by the Wind Tunnel Program Office, responsible for evaluation and development of revised cost basis for the National Wind Tunnel Complex.
  • 1993 Space Station Redesign Team, Team Leader for Option Evaluation, member of the Engineering and Management Teams, responsible for option development and analysis including presentations to the Presidential Advisory Panel (Vest Committee), Congress, Public and Media.
  • 1991 Program/Project Management Summer Study Group, member, NASA Administrator established Group to examine and improve NASA program and project planning concepts and philosophies.
  • 1985 ARC Strategy and Tactics Committee, Chairperson, established by the Center Director and responsible for the development of a Center Strategic Plan.
